Antonio loves Alvar (and Finnish women)

Buon giorno Antonio!

Here is a raw schedule for your week in Finland, beginning from Tampere,
per favore :).

Day 1. Tampere
  
Tampere asevelikylä.
A housing area consisting of 14 houses designed by Alvar Aalto in the early 1940s. The houses were build for men who had served in WWII.

The housing area is located in the district of Nekala, about 4 kilometers from the city centre of Tampere. To get there use Bus 15 from the Central Bus Station (Keskustori) towards Kaukajärvi. The ride takes about 10-15 minutes and you should get off at a stop called Jokipohjantie 18.
Follow the street in the same direction as the bus came for another 100 meter and turn then left to a street called Asevelitie.

The site can easily be distinguished because a large stone was errected as a memorial for the war heros.
 





 Tampella Co. Pekola Housing Area in Tampere (1941-1952)



The precise address of the Tampella Housing Area is Ilmarinkatu 27-35. The housing area consists altogether of 5 appartment houses which were build during the 1940s. The houses belong to Aalto's early red brick periode. Today the houses are owned by TOAS the Tampere Student Housing Foundation so mainly students of the University of Tampere life there.

Rest of the day you could just relax and enjoy. There are many beautiful and interesting hotels and restaurants you can choose.

Day 2. Turku

Next you could travel to Turku. There is much to see. City has a long history and
beautiful Aura-river flows in the midde of the downtown.

Day 3. Turku

Standard Apartment House in Turku (1927-28)

 This apartment house is located in the city center of Turku in a silent side road surrounded by many other residental buildings. The address is Läntinen Pitkäkatu 20.

 Day 4. Helsinki

 Studio Aalto in Helsinki (1954-63) 

 

The Finlandia hall locate in Helsinki is maybe on of Alvar Aalto's most famous work. The Finlandia Hall located at Mannerheimintie 13 was build between 1962 and 1975.


 
The Aalto House (Riihitien Talo) in Helsinki (1935-36) 


Both the Studio Aalto as well as the Aalto House are located in the district of Mukkiniemi which can most conveniently be reached by tram line 4 from the city centre of Helsinki in about 20 minutes. Get off at the stop called "Tiilimäki" and walk up the Tiilimäki street until you reach number 20. The house is run by the Alvar Aalto Foundation and open to the public. Guided tours are arranged for visitors. Further information for opening hours and entrance fees can be found here If you visit both the Studio Aalto and the Aalto House you will get an discount at the second site so safe your entrance ticket!

The Finlandia Hall (1962-75)

 The Finlandia hall locate in Helsinki is maybe on of Alvar Aalto's most famous work. The Finlandia Hall located at Mannerheimintie 13 was build between 1962 and 1975.

 

Day 5. Jyväskylä

In Jyväskylä there are lots of buildings that Alvar Aalto has designed.

The Alvar Aalto Museum in Jyväskylä (1971-73)

 

 

 The museum can be found in Alvar Aalto Katu 7, the street named after Aalto, next to the Museum of Central Finland which was as well designed by Alvar Aalto.

The Museum of Central Finland in Jyväskylä (1956-61)

 

 As mentioned before the Museum of Central Finland is located next to the Alvar Aalto Museum but was completed about 10 years earlier.

 The Jyväskylä Wokers' Club (1924-25)

 Adress is Väinönkatu 7.

 

Day 6. Jyväskylä  

 The Administrative and Cultural Centre in Jyväskylä (1964-82)


 



 Aira Apartment House Railway Workers' Building (1924-26)

 

 The Aira Apartment House is located in Jyväskyläs city centre at Tapionkatu 2.


Teaching Practice School and Gymnasium (1952-54)


 The teaching practice school was the first Alvar Aalto building erected for the University of Jyväskylä main campus and date back to the early 1950s. 

 

Day 7. Tampere
