Exercise 1. Friz is a fan of old ships



Hello Friz!

There are many interesting ships here in Finland you could visit on your holiday.
Finnish coast is beautiful and there is lots of things to see. I´m sure you will have a memorable trip.

First ship you would might want to see is m/s Brahe in Hamina.
Ship isn´t very old, but it has an interesting past.
It was build in Chicago 1943 during second world war. It was an escort vessel.
After that it has been used as a warship at west coast of Africa and also as a ferry at Norway.
Here it has been sailing at Saimaa and at Gulf of Finland.

Next city where you should defenately visit is Kotka.
In Kotka there is Maritime Centre Vellamo, and there is Maritime museum of Finland.

There you could  learn more about Finnish maritime history and what specialities northern maritime has.
There are many museum ships at Vellamo.
For example Tarmo. (Build in England 1907)
Pitkäpaasi (build in Norway 1898) 
Maritime Centre is a unique building. It is wave-like and made of glass.

Next place could be Loviisa. There is a sailing ship called Österstjernan.
Original ship has been launched 1814 at has transported cargo and passengers at baltic sea.
You could go on a sailing trip that they arrange there at Loviisa harbour.




Near Loviisa is Porvoo. Porvoo is old and interesting city and you should visit there if you are interested in Finnish history.
You could go to a cruise to Söderskärs isle.
There is a gorgeous old lighthouse and you could stay there for a night.

In Turku there is a Maritime Centre Forum Marinum. There is a ship called Suomen Joutsen (Swan of Finland) It has been build in Saint Nazeir 1902 and has been used as a cargo ship. Since 1930 it has been used as a training ground for finnish navy.





If you have enough time you could explore Turku archipelago.

At Rauma there is a very nice camping site Poroholma and there is a ship called m/aux Kathrina (1949).
It is a original schooner and it is the biggest museum ship in use in Finland. 




In Vaasa you should explore Merenkurkku archipelago and for example many wonderful old lighthouses and beacons.



In Helsinki and Turku there is held events at summertime where sailing ships gather.
